“I’m always looking for the beauty in things that have been discarded,” says Bruce Turnbull. “As I get older, I realize how important Dr. Seuss is to a well-rounded education,” he adds.

A renovation and construction manager by day, Turnbull uses discarded materials from building sites to create his art. He works with beeswax and oil paints that are fused to the surface with heat. With a whimsical approach to his work, Turnbull’s subjects range from hockey players and skiers to angels and bumblebees.

“The inspiring thing about Bruce is that his artistic work starts in demolition,” says D. Mackinnon. “He remodels your house, salvages the surfaces, and paints intelligently executed images on them. It has been most satisfying, for us, that our old home lives on in the form of beautiful art on our walls.”

Bruce Turnbull graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1998 and completed his MFA at the New York Academy of Art, NY. His art can be found in public collections including the National Portrait Gallery of Canada, the Colart Collection, Quebec and private collections in Canada, the US, Europe and Asia. He is a two-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Award, a Canadian grant given to emerging artists.

Angels Among the Rhetoric: DTES Photo Exhibition at Interurban Gallery

October 15, 2010
Many of you have seen the photographer wandering around the neighbourhood over the past 18 – 24 months or so – Horst Siegler was determined to visually connect the public to homelessness and that it is everyone’s problem to fix.
He got to know many of DTES residents, including Lookout Emergency Aid volunteers and learned that people who have nothing are often more generous and caring than others in the general population.
He has created a photo journey that is amazing, and he has matched it to some hard hitting photo’s with facts attached – to illustrate how society has institutionalized homelessness.   It is titled Angels Among the Rhetoric.
The photo’s will be on display from Oct 8 to 25  at the Interurban Gallery,

1 E. Hastings at Carrall.  Phone: 604-633-2665

Megaphone Victory Square Block Party Returns!

September 2, 2010

Following a one-year hiatus, Megaphone is helping bring the glorious Victory Square Block Party back to Vancouver on Sunday, September 5th. Co-sponsored with their friends at Music Waste, the free cultural event shows what’s possible when the community comes together to have a good time and support a good cause.

With the first Victory Square Block Party held 2004, this year’s event builds on the festival’s tradition of providing free and fresh entertainment to the city, while bringing new bands, comedians and spectators into the fold.

Headlining this year’s lineup is Vancouver garage-rock duo The Pack A.D. and the power-pop outfit The Tranzmitors. The day will also see local favourites Apollo Ghosts and Makeout Videotape, both who are riding a wave of hype and critical praise. A few of the city’s best sketch groups will provide some laughs in between, as well as a stand up set by acclaimed author and comedian Charles Demers.

Proceeds from the event’s raffle draw will go toward Megaphone’s vendor program and will help them kick-start their Fall fundraising drive.

“Megaphone’s mission is about fostering community connections,” says Sean Condon, Megaphone’s executive director, “and the Victory Square Block Party has a history of bringing people together to celebrate culture and create positive change. The money raised from the raffle draw will allow us to continue to give our homeless and low-income vendors the tools and skills they need to be successful.”

If you are unable to attend the event, you can make a donation to Megaphone’s vendor program online.

The completely free Victory Square Block Party will take place on Sunday, September 5th from 2-9 p.m. at Victory Square Park (W. Hastings and Cambie).
