November 19 First United Church celebrates the Sacred Music of Duke Ellington!‏

November 18, 2010

Join Dee Daniels and Marcus Mosely with the Fred Stride Orchestra as they bring to life the Sacred Music of Duke Ellington.  Rick Cluff, from CBC will again be our emcee for the evening, last year he was at a loss for words and many described the event as “spectacular”. Proceeds will benefit the work of First United Church supporting those most in need in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside for 125 years providing shelter and services for more than 600 people daily.

The notes crafted on paper years ago, the voice in the past that sang those notes into our hearts, the instruments and artists in the room on the night, your presence there in the moment are all woven into the fabric of that sacred space. The music becomes us. We become the music.  The shadows and the light in each of our personal lives are the diversity and discord that, as is the character of Jazz, become a blended experience of sacred music.  As the music moves us and lifts us,  it wings us to places of Hope and Light; it calls us to listen and receive – and it compels us to participate and co-create.  Once entered and experienced, the Sacred Space leaves us forever changed, at the same time both more vulnerable and more whole.

We enter the Sacred space separately and independently with our individual struggles and joys. In that space we become one collective symphony for Hope and Healing. When we leave we go in separate ways but always remain part of the music that connected us, part of the Hope that continues to sing in our hearts.

Bright Minds Bright Futures Direct Assistance Network Fundraiser!

November 2, 2010

MISSION STATEMENT
Direct Assistance Network
Empowering by Educating

Education is the only way to end inequality and injustice as well as further hope for a better world. Not only is it a fundamental human right, it enhances lives and will end generational cycles of poverty and disease. Society’s deeply rooted inequalities condemn millions of children in Africa-particularly girls-to a life without quality education and missed opportunities. A rights-based approach to education can address these issues. The key to a stable and peaceful Africa is its women, therefore, we must educate the “Girl Child” in order to help Africa. Let’s use our networks to directly help those in need of an education. Support our work in Africa.

The ‘Bright Minds Bright Futures’ Fundraiser will take place on Sunday the 7th of November at 811 Carnarvon St, New Westminster.

Indigo Foods @ Taste of Health 2010!

October 20, 2010

It’s time to mark your calendars for October 23rd, from 9:30 to 4:30 for the 11th annual veggie food fair called “Taste of Health”!

Embers Build a Business graduate Lovena Galyide of Indigo Foods will be there with samples, demos and information!

What is it? You pay $5 (unless you’re an Earthsave member) and you get to sample all kinds of vegan foods, shop for new products and attend cooking demos and workshops.  More sampling this year than in previous years.

Taste of Health is always one of the best days of the year. And this year it is super conveniently located, at 8th and Granville in Vancouver. You know where Chapters is? A hop skip and a jump from there.

They are proud to present our keynote speaker for Taste Of Health 2010, John Robbins, author of numerous dietary books and founder of Earthsave.

Then in the evening is our Taste of Health Gala with keynote speaker John Robbins. He’s the author of Diet for a New America and the reason many people switched to a plant based diet. Google him and you will be impressed!

The gala will include musical entertainment, a balloon raffle, silent auction and a free beverage and appetizers. There will be mingling time, with many people dressed up, so it’s an exciting event.

Garbage Can Art Contest Sunday 26th of September!

September 16, 2010

Twenty-five artists including EMBERS Build-a-Business graduate AJ Brown will take part in the four hours of creative madness, turning plain metal umbrella stands, provided by the event sponsor, Granville Island Ferries, into works of art.

In previous years the artworks have been created out of metal garbage cans, but sensing that they had perhaps saturated the market for these large decorated cans, and wanting to provide something that would be suitable for more of today’s smaller urban homes, organizers this year have chosen to switch to a smaller metal umbrella stand.

Every year in late September (Sunday, September 26, 2010), twenty-five artists take part in four hours of creative madness, turning plain metal cans into works of art.

The Granville Island Ferries Garbage Can Art Contest & Auction was launched in 1986 by the late George McInnis, founder of Granville Island Ferries, and the tradition is carried on each fall by his son Dave and the enthusiastic staff of Granville Island Ferries.

The artists provide their own art supplies, inspiration, genius and sweat and tears as required. Granville Island Ferries supplies the umbrella stands, tents, water, power and a sheltered area for spray-painting.  To keep the artists and crowds in a holiday mood, Celtic music is provided throughout the afternoon by the popular local band Blackthorn.

Trudy Van Dop, publisher of the Van Dop Art Guide To British Colulmbia, assembles a team of  judges from the local arts community award first, second and third place (with modest cash prizes) and the finished collectibles are then auctioned by broadcast personality Dave Abbott to raise funds to purchase supplies for the art therapy programs at British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital.
Participating artists have from 11 am to 3 pm to complete their works by painting, gluing, snipping and otherwise adorning their metal cans.

The auctioning of the finished works of art begins at 3:30 pm.

Each auctioned can contains an assortment of gift items donated by Granville Island community businesses.
